Patricia Israel (1939-2011)– Artista política judío–chilena/Chilean Jewish politically-oriented artist

Patricia Israel

Patricia Israel (1939-2011) was born in Temuco, Chile and studied at the Tótila Albert Sculpture Academy, before studying at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Chile. She lived in Argentina and Venezuela. She was a painter and engraver of Jewish origin attached to Neo-expressionism. Among the thematic axes of her work are the various situations that symbolize the human relationship with the world, developing specific themes, such as the Jewish Holocaust, but which, transferred to the field of art, represents universal pain and horror. This union is always presented under a neat formal treatment that allows us to glimpse the drawing as a support for his imaginary, using both color and the fabric itself, as a support for the composition. That modus operandi, which has been the spearhead of his production from the beginning, allowed her to address Americanist themes more forcefully in his most recent works. Starting his research in literary texts, she rescued iconographic images such as the conqueror and the dominated, representing the still utopian South American liberation. Israel was the first woman to win the Valparaíso International Art Biennial (1991), something very significant for her, since from the very beginning of her career she assumed and defended her position as a woman, Chilean and Latina in defense of gender injustice, as an analogy for the suffering of the oppressed. Hence, his painting “Woman” from the same year is a tribute to this fight. Her work has been exhibited internationally, highlighting his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1974 and the Altazor Award for National Arts received the year after her death in 2012.

  1. Good morning, Steve.

I just finished reading this post and I wonder there was any connection between Patricia Isarel and Carlos Hermosilla Alvarez, Liliana’s Uncle, and/or Marina Pinto, Liliana’s aunt who was not only a nurse but also an artist.

The post does not contain any information about any formal training. Patria Israel was born the year that Carlos was appointed a Professor of Engraving at the fledging School of Fine Arts in Vina. He continued to the mid-1970s when he retired. Given the central role he played in art in the region, she would have been familiar with him.

We’ve been in touch with Marjorie Agosin recently. Her newly edited book entitled Refugees, Refuge, and Human Displacement has been published and last week we received a copy with Carlos’ print entitled el Exito (Exodus) on the cover. The original adorns our living room wall and we are pleased that we were able to give the publisher permission to reproduce the engraving.

One piece of big family news is that our son in law Andy Baker, Chairman of the Political Science Department, at the University of Colorado-Boulder, has taken a position at Purdue University and he and our daughter Lila Rosenthal and our granddaughter Della Anne Baker Rosenthal will be moving to West Lafayette, Indiana. It’s a three and a half hour drive from Milwaukee and we’re thrilled to have them back in the Middle West.

Lila works for a company that does tele-medicine and she can practice primary care from anywhere. So her work will be unaffected.

We hope that you and your family are well.

    Regards from Liliana,

    Joel

    1. Hi Joel, I couldn’t find much more information about Patricia Israel, but her work is well-known in Chile because in 1991 she won the Biennial in Valparaiso, which suggests she knew Carlos. She was the first woman to win that prize. I put a bit more biographical material in the blog post. Warmly, Steve
